“As the crow flies” Series
Artist Statement
In ancient times, stories were passed down by word of mouth. As civilization evolved, books became the repositories of human experience and imagination. Today, knowledge is documented as zeros and ones, but the beauty and power of physical books reflect our humanity in ways a computer never could.
My intent in creating this series is to glorify books and the stories they contain. The dark canvases contrast with the lightness of the antique book pages and ornate metalwork, illustrating the idea of the light of knowledge born of the darkness. Layering and painting canvases create texture and interest in much the same way a writer weaves the plot of a story.
There is a story in each of us, a torch of knowledge just waiting to emerge from the dark.
